NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
FINAL:
A: The following 14 cryptic clues, which all have a characteristic in common, are listed in alphabetical order by answer. Interlock the answers to these 14 clues into the smallest crossword-style grid possible.
Once you have created the grid, use the path directions provided to derive a sentence. Starting with the letter at the intersection of 1 Across and 1 Down, use each compass direction listed to travel to the next letter, passing over any blank spaces in the process.
Add the two digit solution you obtain to the obvious two digit number that you come across during your journey for your final answer.
1) Your orientation within the grid remains the same, i.e. if the next compass direction indicates North, you should always proceed directly upward in the grid.
2) The grid does not wrap around, so any direction that would have you ‘fall off’ the grid means that you should check your work for errors.
3) The final grid is square, and the extents of the words determine the grid size. For instance, if your final crossword is 13 X 13, there will be at least one letter each in row one, in column one, in row thirteen, and in column thirteen.
4) The smallest grid, for the purposes of this puzzle, is the one with the least number of blank squares.
5) Only one letter per crossword square.
6) Each word, when placed in the finished grid, will contain at least two checked (that is, it is part of an answer reading across and another reading down) letters.
7) Certain parts of the question can provide additional hints; even letters, long phrases and some words can too, if you look carefully enough.

SMASHES

INGRATE
RELATER
ASININE
LINGOTS
SAGENES
Starting at the ‘S’ in the upper left corner, and following the path directions as indicated,
Song thirteen in Attention Line going in a lager in Gera
In German, lager translates into store and Gera is the 73rd largest city in Germany. Hopefully, by this point, the solver is thinking about Germany and German/English translations. Attention Line can be loosely translated into German as Achtung Kabel. (Achtung is a fairly straightforward translation, popularized by the U2 album Achtung Baby. A search on Amazon for popular music with an album name containing Achtung yields the correct album on the first page.) Song thirteen on Achtung Kabel is 23.
23 + 13 = 36
Additional hints were provided as follows Clue 7 is referencing itself. “additional hints; even letters, long” can be rewritten as the phrase “additional hint seven letters long”, indicating that each of the cryptic answers is seven letters long, and it is listed under clue 7. The 13 X 13 grid is a reference to the thirteen found along the path and is used as one of the addends in achieving the final solution. Jay Winter, writer.
Z: The years are 1821 and 1943, so the answer is half of 122, or 61.
The Mexico 50 peso was issued from 1921 to 1947 (missing some years), each having 1821 on the left and the year of issue on the right at bottom. More were issued later but froze on the 1947 date. All but 1943 were legal tender and had "50 pesos" left of the allegorical figure. But only in 1943 it was a bullion coin and repeated the weight data at right, with no denomination present. Thus the sharp-eyed numismatist can determine which year this was. Bob Lodge, writer.

Is the "characteristic in common" mentioned in the instructions the seven letter length of each answer?

Alan,
Yes, 7-letter words is what they all share in common.
