March Madness IV - Teams Names & Intro

March Madness IV by Antoinette D'Ammora, John Daly, Mike Graczyk, Jim from Minnesota, Alan Lemm, JonMichael Rasmus, Paula Stevens and Jay Winter. Edited by JonMichael Rasmus.

Welcome to the fourth installment of the very popular March Madness contest.  In it, trivia mavens will attempt to solve some of the trickiest problems known to man as submitted by you, the viewers of the UCDP. For each, "game" listed on the bracket , a "team" will score a certain number of points (an integer valued at some number 25 through 100). The number of points they score will be equal to the answer to a trivia question that you must solve. The "winner" will be the team with the higher amount of "points."

In each game, the questions will be listed for the higher seed first. In Round 1 (Thurs. & Fri.), the team's names will be given. In all other rounds (until the semi-final), the higher seeded teams questions will be listed first. In Semi-Finals and Finals, the team's will be listed alphabetically.

To enter: submit an e-mail with your name and city to jumbledpile -at- yahoo -dot- com before April 15  with your completed bracket. Traditional "32 points per round" will be used.  The questions will be revealed slowly corresponding to NCAA game days, but there's plenty to figure out on day 1, so don't be afraid. You can only submit an answer ONE time; any further answers will be disqualified. One randomly selected entrant with the largest number of points will receive a copy of JM's new board game Cineplexity.

Any questions about the questions should be directed to me. For more information on how brackets work, google "NCAA tournament wiki" or similar.

Good luck and may the best team win!

Unfortunately, I do not have bracket macking software this year, so I ask you to use this list which will serve as the bracketing.

This is just if anyone wants to use a bracket for preliminary sketching...I don't know what works for anyone else out there, but it tends to be how I plan best.

Thanks again to JM for putting all this together--get your brain muscles flexed (and aspirin handy)...it's almost here!

The problems are submitted by the readers - does this mean that the whole tournament's puzzles are ready, or are you looking for more puzzle submissions?

Posted by: jim miller | Mar 22, 2008 10:28:29 AM

Two things.

I can take the first five questions BEFORE Wednesday for Thursday's games, which are still open.

Two I receioved this via e-mail:
"I'm looking for a puzzle that was a contest back in the late 80's or early 90's.

It had about 50 questions where each answer was a number to be plugged into a formula and solve the problem. If you got even one question wrong, your answer would be wrong.

One question I remember was - What juror number was Henry Fonda in "12 Angry Men" ?

Can you tell me issue number so I can track it down, or do you have access to magazine or the contest itself?"

I can provide an e-mail for this person if you can help.

What is the deadline for March Madness?

Posted by: Alan Lemm | Apr 9, 2008 5:48:49 PM

I usually have the deadline be tax day: April 15, but I can extend it if people feel they'll get a few more points.

Posted by: JmSR | Apr 10, 2008 7:18:53 AM

PLEASE extend it. I forgot that it was coming up so quickly. can we at least have one more week?

Posted by: Paula | Apr 10, 2008 9:25:04 AM

Let's make it the end of April.

Posted by: JmSR | Apr 10, 2008 9:27:18 AM

April of this year?! (no, wait, I think I used that joke last year.)

Posted by: ross | Apr 10, 2008 9:31:09 AM

Yes, end of April would be great--I'm entrenched in a bunch of homework assignments and tests and papers and whatnot right now. Hopefully, I'll be able to squeeze in some solving time after it's all over.

Posted by: Mike | Apr 10, 2008 4:54:35 PM

Everyone's entries are in, right? I should award a winner, right?

Posted by: JmSR | May 1, 2008 7:17:55 AM

I though that end of April was the deadline...I'd say so.

(posting the answers seems as important as awarding the winner, for me anyway)

Posted by: Jay Winter | May 1, 2008 7:58:52 AM

The answers are more important than the winner to me.

My head is about to explode...9-1-1=15, 7-3-5=26, 6-12-8=53,...WHY?

Posted by: Paula | May 1, 2008 8:58:30 AM

Well, the winner was Paula Stevens with 124 points. Congrats Paula, get me your address so I can send you the winnings.

[This commnt original said Don Vance but Paula's e-mail had been sent to my spam box, since I found it - she moved into first. I apologize.]

Answers soon.

Posted by: JmSR | May 1, 2008 9:24:29 AM

I have a feeling Paula's sending a virtual glare in my direction which will intensify shortly (I got your e-mail last night but I was equally stumped where you were and made little headway elsewhere)

I have shattered my vow ("My rosary is broken / And my beads have all slipped through")--we have too many diabolical people here so I didn't submit but congrats on who did--do a dance, the winner is Vance! This is a lot of fun each year, but I think the mystery of why I've been getting all these migraines lately is solved (I never thought I knew so little about card games).

Fun ride, regardless, all--look forward to seeing what I stumbled on.

Posted by: Mike | May 1, 2008 9:28:53 AM

How exciting!
But it truly must have been the lucky coin I used last night. I never did get the round two list that starts with Maine. And in the sweet 16 round I only had two pairs solved (I found half of 4 games and nothing for 2)and that sort of situation extended into the rest of the bracket including two answers in the final four - but of course not for the same game...

Again, finding out the answers and letting my brain rest is what I'm looking forward to the most. Until next March, of course...

Posted by: Paula | May 1, 2008 10:18:22 AM

I don't have a clever rhyme for "Paula" or "Stevens" now, hahaha.

Congrats regardless! (And relish the silver, Don)

Posted by: Mike | May 1, 2008 10:59:50 AM

Here's the thing. The score were in a lot of flux becuase of errors by yours truly. Don and Paula, I will send you both a copy of the game since you both did so well. Send me your addresses.

Posted by: JmSR | May 1, 2008 11:03:27 AM

Mike - I was glaring a bit when your solutions started to be revealed. But by the time I got to the astrology question, I gave you a bit more than a glare...(And myself a knock on the head).

You wrote some really doozies this time - thanks for the challenge. My favorite aha moment was with the function question - I was really proud of myself on getting that one in the end (even though I had no chance of recognizing T.S. Elliot)

Now, I gotta know, did anyone really figure out the pattern on that purple card?

Posted by: Paula | May 1, 2008 11:10:42 AM

Munch a lunch
Eat a dinner
Congratulations to the two joint winners!

Even with my love of poetry, I still didn't catch T.S. Eliot.

In retrospect, the purple card question was probably a bit to on the challenging side since there were admittedly too many different possibilities for that (I shouldn't have ramped it up as much as I did)--Ponturu looks enchanting; I've heard of it before but not pursued it much, and I didn't grasp that the pictures were hints to the puzzle (I thought the numbered circles referred to letters in positions of the pictures).

I did a function question last year so any of those should be giveaways on my end...glad you cracked a few of mine. ;)

The Scrabble opening plays (I'm kicking myself) and the state abbreviation multipliers (clever) were roadblocks for me early on, and I had trouble gaining a toehold elsewhere. Still, of course, lots of fun!

(And I'm horrible at anything "Star Wars" so I'm just lucky that the puzzle of mine that had "100" as the answer was opposite yours, Paula!)

Posted by: Mike | May 1, 2008 11:51:08 AM

I feel a strange mixture of guilt and elation over having done so well. I usually send in a couple of puzzles for this event and I even had 3 prepared for this year, but I was out of the country when the deadline came and went (Australia, Poker Tournament). I also got very lucky on a couple of the answers. never got the Atlanta GA thing, and just flipped a coin. For the Star Wars question, I just added up the episode numbers that each character appeared in, including C3PO (Anthony Daniels) and came out with 45. Wrong number but still worked. Although I Googled PAWNTOROOS, PONTWORUSE, etc. I still hadn't heard of Ponturu. And I thought it was happenstance that A WOMAN LEGEND happened to anagram into Agnew and Mondale. Never made the connection. These puzzles are getting tougher and funner each season. I cannot give enough kudos to our sponsors, without whom, our lives would be a little less exciting. A million thanx.

By the way, I could have sworn I smelled a little Bob Lodge in a couple of those puzzles. His absence as an author left me surprised and saddened. Where are you, Bob?

Posted by: Don Vance | May 2, 2008 12:27:23 AM

Sorry not to have been around for a while, and I feel bad I did not get input into MM this year, save one team school name. Last week my mother died, and right now I have family visiting from Hawaii, New York, and Alaska (to Washington State). I'm at my brother's, still borrowing computers.

If anyone is interested, her obit is here:

(You may have to paste together to get link to work.)

But, I'll be back!

Sincere condolences to you, Bob. We certainly missed you.

Oh, Bob, I'm so sorry to hear about your Mom. My sincerest and deepest sympathy to you and your family.

What a nice obit, lovely tribute to her.

We miss you, Bob, come back soon.

I agree that that is a very touching tribute to what sounds like a great mother and person. Send my condolences and prayers for your family as well.

Congratulations, Paula and Don, on winning MM!!
