Les Paul & Mary Ford were very popular in the mid-50s and Les remains a well recognized figure today because of his work with guitars. “Hummingbird” is nothing revolutionary: a plaintive country ballad about not wanting to consider the man that which may break your heart in the end. Mary’s innocence is totally believable and Les’ guitar playing is good, but this song is a testament to why mid-50s music doesn’t move me. No matter how good the song is, I just can’t get into it because it’s maudlin and passive. Pop music should be more undeniable and this ain’t.
