When John Sams and I were picking the last of the top tens that we needed, we found “It’s a Sin to Tell a Lie.” In our apartment on a second-hand record player, we heard this quaint barbershop group singing about never telling a lie because it was a sin. Given that religion and pop were still linked, it wasn’t strange. Then it happened: “If she leads me to the altar, then I’m sunk / ‘cause I can’t tell the preacher I was drunk.” WHAT?!? Neither of us could believe it; it’s been one of our favorites ever since.
Not true. I heard a while before JM, and played it for him in the apartment. It was his first and my second time.
