Without stating the obvious, Pat Boone’s “I’ll Be Home” is slow and steady and unfortunately Pat won his race. I’m not sure this was that good a song before Pat covered it, though. The lyrics, about a soldier opining the long distance between his hunny and himself and asking her to wait, have been done better and don’t include the spoken word line “I’ll be home to start serving you.” Yuck! This song, more than any other, confirms that Pat Boone blazed a trail for such rock and rollers as Bobby Goldsboro, Michael Bolton and Barry Manilow.
