My good friend Sean Weitner, film editor of Flak magazine, made an astute observation on Little Richard: “When we were growing in the 80s, Little Richard seemed like a novelty act. It’s really hard for our generation to think of how truly innovative Little Richard was.” I couldn’t agree more. Little Richard with his strange howls and mushmouthed rapid-fire delivery now seems quaint as opposed to the sexual threat it was then. This song (which only spent one week in the top ten) exemplifies a newfound spaziness that shocked a generation. Even if the lyrics are really weird.
