This song is hard to sing (right, John?). Sonny James, a country singer enjoying his only pop top ten, does a pretty good job of nailing it and is only prevented from getting to number one by Tab Hunter (who we’ll delve into soon). 1957 was all about misunderstood teen-agers (NB: hyphenated) and this song leads the pack. In this one, those crazy kids indicate that young love is true and “filled with deep devotion” as opposed to a creamy center. This is one of the rock era’s first non-Elvis guitar and drum back-ups as his influence begins to spread.
